Auto Accident Kills Two in McMinn County
Alcohol reportedly played a role in a car wreck that claimed the lives of two victims along I-75 in McMinn County on Saturday Afternoon. According to the reports, two vehicles were traveling in the same direction along the road when the first car, driven by 41-year-old Stephen A. Martinson, veered into the left hand lane and then over-corrected by swerving back into the right lane, causing it to strike another vehicle. This made both vehicles lose control and drive off of the roadway. Martinson, who was killed in the wreck, had reportedly been drinking. Officers are not sure who was driving the other vehicle involved in the crash, but 32-year-old Jason Higgins was killed in the accident. Both of the other passengers, 27-year-old Jason Duncan and 31-year-old Justin James Higgins were both injured in the accident. Martinson, Jason Higgins and Justin James Higgins were reported as not wearing seatbelts during the accident.
DUI-related deaths are 100% preventable, but are unfortunately fairly commonplace on America’s roadways. Auto accidents caused by drunk driving occur on a routine basis in the state of Tennessee and often result in death and other serious injuries such as paralysis, broken bones, brain damage, and other painful and chronic ailments. Victims of such accidents deserve to recover for their medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, loss of enjoyment of life and every other ill effect they have suffered at the hands of drunk drivers. Likewise, the victims’ families may have a basis for recovery as well, especially if the victim dies as a result of the accident. Drinking and driving is unacceptable behavior on Tennessee’s roadways and can give rise to compensatory and punitive damages.
