Driver Killed in Six-Vehicle Crash Involving Tractor-Trailer

Seventy-six year-old Irene Atkins of Crossville, Tennessee was reportedly struck by a tractor-trailer and died after a six-vehicle crash on 347 eastbound in Roane County at about 6:00 a.m. on Monday. A trooper from the Tennessee Highway Patrol described the accident as a "chain reaction crash." The first car was driven by 36-year-old Arthur J. Rivers, who hydroplaned and ran off the right side of the road, leaving the front end of his car in traffic. The second car, driven by 35-year-old Scott Bilbrey, hit Rivers's car and then the third car, driven by 56-year-old Charlie Langley, swerved to avoid the first two vehicles and hit the Rivers' vehicle on the left side. The fourth car, driven by 43-year-old Robert Calabrese, Jr., hit the car driven by Langley in the rear and the fifth car, driven by Atkins swerved to avoid the other cars and hit Rivers' vehicle one on the left side. Atkins' car came to rest against a concrete wall and she got out of the vehicle, at which point she was struck by a vehicle driven by 43-year-old Kirk Patrick Romero, who swerved to avoid the collision and struck Atkins's car in the rear and hit Atkins as well, killing her.

The unfortunate reality about driving on the highway or interstate is that it only takes one car to start a collision that can involve dozens of vehicles and place a lot of lives in jeopardy. This is especially true when tractor-trailers are involved because their size and lack of maneuverability makes it extremely difficult for their drivers to adjust to changing conditions in the roadway and avoid wrecks or people who may be in or near the roadway. In situations such as this one where a multitude of drivers is involved, it may be hard for an individual to determine who is responsible for their injuries. The truth is that several parties may be responsible for some part in the collision and that there may be multiple avenues for recovery for those injured in such accidents or who may have lost a family member under similar circumstances. Contact a skilled personal injury attorney today for assistance in determining who may be at fault for your injuries and how victims of such accidents can get the recovery they deserve.
