Driver Killed in Six-Vehicle Crash Involving Tractor-Trailer

Seventy-six year-old Irene Atkins of Crossville, Tennessee was reportedly struck by a tractor-trailer and died after a six-vehicle crash on 347 eastbound in Roane County at about 6:00 a.m. on Monday. A trooper from the Tennessee Highway Patrol described the accident as a "chain reaction crash." The first car was driven by 36-year-old Arthur J. Rivers, who hydroplaned and ran off the right side of the road, leaving the front end of his car in traffic. The second car, driven by 35-year-old Scott Bilbrey, hit Rivers's car and then the third car, driven by 56-year-old Charlie Langley, swerved to avoid the first two vehicles and hit the Rivers' vehicle on the left side. The fourth car, driven by 43-year-old Robert Calabrese, Jr., hit the car driven by Langley in the rear and the fifth car, driven by Atkins swerved to avoid the other cars and hit Rivers' vehicle one on the left side. Atkins' car came to rest against a concrete wall and she got out of the vehicle, at which point she was struck by a vehicle driven by 43-year-old Kirk Patrick Romero, who swerved to avoid the collision and struck Atkins's car in the rear and hit Atkins as well, killing her.

Statute of Limitations in Auto Accidents

Our blog frequently discusses specific instances of negligent or reckless driving that leads to auto accidents, especially instances that involve large trucks, vehicles driving at excessive speeds, or drivers who attempt to text while driving. Blog entries often focus on how helpful a personal injury attorney can be to victims of these accidents who have lost loved ones in motor vehicle crashes or who have suffered serious injuries and face a mountain of medical bills and lost wages. What our blog rarely focuses on, however, is the necessity of contacting an East Tennessee personal injury attorney as quickly as possible.

Sevier Motorcyclists Killed in Crash

A couple from Sevier County was reportedly killed last Tuesday when a van driven by Thomas M. Johns, Jr. of Sevierville attempted to turn left onto Island Boulevard and was struck a 1987 Suzuki motorcycle driven by Jeffrey and Amanda Adams that was traveling westbound on Boyd’s Creek highway a little before 6:00 p.m. Boyd’s Creek highway, a stretch of highway that connects Highway 66 and Chapman Highway in Sevier County, is a fairly heavily trafficked road that has seen its fair share of deadly accidents in recent years. Our condolences go out to the friends and family of the young victims involved in this accident. Details are sketchy as to who was at fault for the wreck or exactly how the collision occurred.

Texting May Be Cause of New Market Crash

Tennessee Highway Patrol Officials say Vitalina Nunes, a thirty-one year old woman from Jefferson City, Tennessee may have been texting when she had a one-car accident in her 2000 Ford Focus mini-van in New Market last Friday at around 7:50 a.m. She was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when she crossed the highway divider and then overcorrected when she had noticed what she had done, causing the van to roll over five times and eject Nunes from the vehicle. She was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Texting while driving is a frequent topic on this blog site, because it is becoming increasingly common as a cause of traffic accidents. Drivers seem to think that this method of communicating while driving is relatively safe since it only takes a few seconds to send a short text, but studies have shown that drivers travel over the length of a football field without looking at the road when sending most texts, making such activity more dangerous than talking on the phone while driving and even more dangerous than driving under the influence in many cases. As discussed in our previous blog, efforts are being made to educate drivers as to how dangerous this behavior is in the hopes of avoiding accidents such as this one.

Texting while driving is among the most dangerous forms of negligent driving in Tennessee and shows no signs of slowing down as a leading cause of automobile accidents. Victims of texting related accidents and their families deserve to recover for injuries, lost wages, and other expenses that arise as a result of this type of negligent driving. Contact an East Tennessee personal injury attorney today to learn how you and your loved ones can recover for your losses.

Pigeon Forge Uses Go-Carts to Demonstrate Dangers of Texting While Driving

The Pigeon Forge Fire Department, Pigeon Forge Police, Pigeon Forge High School, and AAA East Tennessee all came together recently to teach kids the dangers of texting while driving by inviting them to participate in an experiment in which they and their friends would drive a go-cart around The Track in Pigeon Forge while texting each other. The kids noticed that while texting they drove slower and wrecked much more frequently. Luckily, these collisions occurred in the relative safety of the go-cart track at mere speeds of 14 miles per hour. The organizations who conducted these tests are hoping that the young drivers who participated will now be more aware of what could happen to them at potentially greater speeds and will help get the message across to their friends.
