Two Dead and Seven Injured in Head-On Collision

Highway 10 in Lafayette, Tennessee played host to a deadly motor vehicle accident late Tuesday afternoon when a van full of migrant workers and a semi-truck crashed head-on. The van was reportedly turning left at the time of the accident, so it seems likely that the van turned into the path of the semi which caused the crash. Two of the van’s occupants died at the scene while five other passengers were taken to the hospital by helicopter. Three were in critical condition Tuesday evening, one was critical but stable and one was stable. The semi-truck driver was not injured. Thoughts go out to everyone involved in this tragic collision as well as their friends and families.

Memphis Woman Caught with Thirteen Kids in Vehicle

A twenty-five year-old Memphis woman is facing reckless driving charges after she was caught with thirteen kids in the back of her Ford Explorer. Police were reportedly responding to a fight at a local skating rink last Saturday when they spotted twenty-five year-old Treshundra Barnes speeding and swerving, almost striking several children near the skating rink. None of the children in the back of the Explorer were wearing a seat belt. In addition to the reckless driving charges, Barnes also faces fourteen seat belt violations and is charges with driving without a license.

Chemical Spill Closes I-40

Traffic is back to normal after a chemical spill around 1:45 shut down part of the eastbound interstate near the Western Avenue and 17th Street Exit. The Knoxville Fire Department’s hazardous materials team was reportedly called to respond to the scene of the spill around 1:45 p.m. when a trailer carrying a drain opening chemical to a flea market in North Carolina was pulled loose from the bumper of the vehicle that was towing the trailer, causing a chemical to spill all over the roadway. The substance was originally thought to be cleaning supplies, but workers then noticed that it was eating through the pavement. The trailer reportedly contained no markings of any type that identified what type of chemical the trailer was carrying.

Father and Two Children Killed in Knoxville Area Crash

Thirty-one year-old Charles Brawner and his two teenage children were killed while were on their way to a birthday party when the family’s Ford Explorer went off Pellissippi Bridge and landed on Oak Ridge Highway at 1:36 p.m last Sunday afternoon. Other reports have indicated that Mr. Brawner simply lost control of his vehicle which led to the accident. At the time of the crash, Mr. Brawner and his son were sitting in the front of the vehicle and were ejected during the crash, and the daughter was sitting in the back and remained in the vehicle. None of the three victims was reportedly wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. It is not known at this time if the use of seat belts would have prevented the injuries suffered by the victims. Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims’ family members in the wake of this horrible tragedy.

Knox County Man Killed in Rollover Crash

Authorities have identified forty-three year-old Jack Stinnett of Knox County as the individual killed in a single-vehicle crash that took place in the Knoxville area late Saturday night. Apparently, Stinnett and two other individuals, including the driver, forty-nine year-old Michael Campbell of Knoxville, were traveling in a Jeep Cherokee when it crashed into a tree, causing it to strike an embankment and flip over before finally coming to rest on its top. According to reports, alcohol and speeding were cited as factors in the crash and charges are currently pending against the driver.

State Troopers to Crack Down on Drunken Drivers During Labor Day

Many Tennesseans use pretty much any holiday as a reason to celebrate and spend time with friends socializing and having drinks. Unfortunately, many Tennesseans drink too much at such gatherings and make the unfortunate decision to get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Recognizing the increased danger posed by the upcoming Labor Day holiday (which also happens to coincide with the start of football season which is another aggravating condition for DUI increases) the Tennessee Highway Patrol has promised that its troopers will be out in full force looking for drivers who may be operating their vehicles while under the influence and cutting such drivers no slack once they find them.
